The Bible in Basic English (BBE) is a translation of the Bible into Basic English.
To simplify the text, Professor Samuel Hooke and his team limited the vocabulary to C. K. Ogden’s Basic English vocabulary of 850 words. It is believed that these words are sufficent to communicate anything which may be said in English. Additionally, one hundred words that were helpful to understand poetry were added, along with 50 "Bible" words. This version has a total of 1,000 words. The New Testament was released in 1941 and the Old Testament was released in 1949. The 1965 printing of the Bible was published by Cambridge Press in England without any copyright notice and distributed in the US, falling into the Public Domain according to the UCC convention of that time.
The goal of the Bible in Basic English is to simplify the Bible so that more people can read and understand the text. Using the Basic English vocabulary supports this goal. However, the limited vocabulary is less poetic and expressive.
